Fashion Beauty Friend Friday: Closet Frenzy

Today's Fashion Beauty Friend Friday is all about if and how I plan what I wear.

I almost didn't even respond to this week's questions because all of my answers are pretty much..no or I don't but here we go..

1. How do you determine what you will wear that day?

Most of the time, I get up and stand in my room and look at my closet at all the clothes and go and do something else.

LOL

I just own way too many things...and my closet is way too small to hold it all, so things are everywhere.

That is why this year I have seriously started purging (more below).

But I determine what I wear most days by what is clean, easily accessible and fits.

2. Do you plan outfits out in advance for a whole week, month, weekend?

Seriously, I almost never plan out what I am going to wear.

The only time that this happens is when I am going away. But just being home doing my regular thang, no way.

I am very fly by the pants, pun intended.

3. Do you have any specific way of tracking outfits and items already worn so you don't repeat?

I have pieces from season to season that I fall in love with because they are either crazy cute or comfortable or whatever so I try to wear them as much as possible.

So, I am not one of those people who has a problem repeating and this was taken to greater heights when I did my Rockin 10 items for 30 days challenge.

4. How do you discover new combination's of items in your closet? (Trial try-ons? Hanging items together?)

As much as I wish that I had a closet like the one above, that's all organized and lit up and HUMONGO, I don't!!!

So, most of the time its purely out of a need to get out of the house NOW that I will look at pieces and grab them and put them together.

I applaud the people who really take time to do all of this planning but it is just so not me.

I am the girl who will go out and buy something rather than spend time trying to put together an outfit from my closet.

5. To streamline the process for 2011 what is one new thing you can do to cut down your dressing time?

To correct my errant dressing ways, I have begun a huge purge of my closet.

And while this is something that I regularly do in small ways, this year, I am taking it to another level.

My wardrobe is a huge mix of pieces, some that I have had for 20 years or more and a lot of current more trendy pieces, so I am paring it down to only the pieces that I love and know I will get the most mileage out of for years to come.

And besides, my style is changing so much, from the fabrics that I prefer to the colors that I am drawn to.

So, this current purge will leave me with an almost empty closet...good for Goodwill, bad for my wallet.

Why do we do it?

Purging Curvatude continues and today while I was in my basement storage I came across a couple of items, tags still intact, that I had completely forgotten that I even owned.

{$50 LB Dress}

{$34 Cacique bra}

And I just had to shake my head.

I am sure this will be a frequent occurrence as I move forward with this purge and while I am geeked that the dress I came across is perfect for me to wear today, I am still perturbed at myself.

I know I am not the only woman with closets and or storage areas full of never worn clothing and it just makes me wonder why do we do it.

I know that I for one really used to have a "shopping issue" and it didn't help that I had cohorts.

When I worked downtown, lunch was never complete unless it included a "lil shopping excursion". So we rarely took just an hour for lunch and it did not help that we worked for a really big company that stores like New York & Co used to send coupons to for the employees shopping enjoyment as a perk.

So, while I think that for me, my shopping madness back then was in some ways a part of the social life of the crew that I hung with, the only "logical" explanation that I have for it now is that I just love shopping.

And it's not just for clothes. I love home goods also and crafts and...you name it..I got a lot of passions and I over the years I never hesitated to feed them.

And while I don't think that I am an "emotional shopper", I do enjoy the thrill of the hunt. It's one of the reasons why I love spending hours alone in thrift stores.

So, for me this purge is really going to turn into a really big thing. Just in this short amount of time, I already feel lighter. I have a bag sitting at the door now of things that I am going to drop in a donation bin when I leave and its cathartic.

Anyway, are you one of those girls who ends up with unworn, forgotten clothes in their closet?

Please, do tell.

The Purge: One a day

I am in the midst of a major spring cleaning and apartment redo and I don't know about other folks but the older I get the more I need to get rid of.

And when I don't respond to this internal need I suffer the consequences in many ways..

For one I am finding especially as of late, being 'a collector of things' is becoming at times more of a chore than a pleasure.

As my spring cleaning has progressed I have been getting a bit perturbed that I am really only making a dent in the much needed for my sanity's sake purge of the collections.

Yesterday, I was packing my gym bag and could not find one of my shoes and that was just the last damn straw.

I am also one of those girls who has things with the tag still on them that I purchased eons ago or things that I have  worn once and know I will never wear again, which is in itself at this point is major aggravating!

Recently I was reading Make Under My life and Jess wrote about how she was going to undertake a "Throw out Fifty Things Challenge" spurred on by the Gail Blanke book.

It's a really great premise, to basically release things to open up to things.

So I have decided I would take the idea to another level, one that would fit the scope of my issue and remove at a minimum one thing a day from my place.

And while I am sure it will turn out that I am purginng more than one thing a day because I have already collected bags of stuff, I am starting out with saying a minimum of one thing because I know me.

If a non fun task, especially a domestic task takes too much energy I will hate it because I am not a domestic chick and I would rather do almost anything else.

I am gonna start off slowly and thankfully there are several of those huge donation bins within blocks of my flat so I can just take a bag of things and chuck it easily.

Some of the new unworn items and the rarely worn may end up in ReThrifted but most of it will hit the bins.

With that being said...the long overdue, totally needed...

begins..
